There are commercial stretchers that are specifically made for watercolor. They come in different designs and do the job quite well.
Mechanically, these stretchers hold paper by the force of friction, clamping paper along the edges. The paper has to be moistened before being fixed. Once disassembled they release the paper, leaving crisp folded marks along the sides.
Commercial stretchers, however, are quite expensive. The biggest disadvantage is that you need to buy more than one if you plan to do watercolor artwork in different sizes.
