Message from Gerard
It was a hard work. The actual painting is slightly darker.
For the hair I used sepia, but that was a mistake because it is opaque.
The knitting of the sweater, the texture I like but I am aware that it lacks an under layer.
This is a painting of my old colleague and I am happy with the result as it has likeness. I changed opaque sepia to Van Dyck Brown (semi transparent). AlsoI used Payne's Gray instead of Indigo. I like to work with transparent pigments; my pallet has 23 paints plus one white gouache. I am very happy with almost all the paints. If I can control the pigments more so that I do not have to correct much, then I will be very pleased. I am sure that I am on the right way.
Sincerely yours
Gerard
Feedback from Vladimir London, the Watercolor Academy course tutor
Dear Gerard,
Thank you for your beautiful watercolor portraits. I like them very much!
Here's a good tip - you may start with loose washes paying little attention to the under-drawing and afterwards do more defined brushwork, working on details. The underpainting will unite the patchwork of top strokes.
Kind regards,
Vladimir London
